Eye Research

Our group aims at improvement of diagnosis and treatment in ophthalmology with engineering techniques, like modeling and design of instruments. The human eye is an extremely advanced biological system which makes it an attractive application area for cutting edge technologies. Many engineering disciplines like dynamics, mechanics, tribology, control and system identification are involved. Currently, we are working on the following fundamental and applied research projects.

Finite-element modeling of orbital mechanics

Little is known about the mechanical suspension of the human eye in its orbit. A better understanding of the suspension of the eye can be obtained by development of a computational model. Unlike current models of orbital mechanics, this novel type of modeling requires fewer assumptions and allows for modeling complex tissue interactions, complex material behavior and complex geometries. Mechanical behavior of tissues in the orbit

The tissues in the human orbit have a very anisotropic, inhomogeneous, non-linear mechanical nature. The mechanical properties of these tissues play an important role in the suspension of the human eye. We perform mechanical measurements to determine in the mechanical behavior of tissues in the orbit. Read more...

Visualisation of displacements and deformations in the orbit

The fat behind the eye plays an important role in eye motion. In order to gain a better understanding of fat mobility during eye motion, we derive time-dependent three-dimensional deformation vector fields from MRI datasets. Read more...

3-D reconstructions of orbital anatomy (Visible Orbit)

Visible Orbit is a joint project of three academic institutions. Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Academic Medical Center and the University of Technology Delft. These institutions work together in order to make the rich collections of histological sections of the orbit made by Koornneef, Los and de Haan available on the internet. High resolution scans of the sections are now being converted into digital, 3-D reconstructions. Read more...

Treatment of strabismus

The most common surgical intervention on the mechanical behavior of the eye is correction for strabismus (cross-eyed ness). Strabismus affects approximately 5% of the population. The re-operation rate for strabismus surgery currently is approximately 20%. We strive to decrease the number of reoperations. Read more...

Prevention of Retinopathy of prematurity

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is the largest cause of blindness among children in the Netherlands. This blindness disorder is partly caused by high levels of arterial oxygen saturation. To prevent these high levels, oxygen supply needs to be controlled accurately. Read more...
