Research

My research focuses on building an Augmented Reality (AR) system that can perform in a context-free environment. The basic concept is to be able to overlay the required (virtual) information on images of the user’s immediate environment, displaying augmented images on the user’s head-mounted or hand-held display. The “context-free” constraint eliminates the solutions such as utilization of external markers/fiducials, since they require preinstallation. To realize this concept, my research has addressed: natural feature tracking, pose estimation, dense 3D map reconstruction and human-computer-interaction. Moreover, I have investigated the utilization of 3D point clouds (extracted by map reconstruction process) for different applications such as: object recognition, object segmentation, shape fitting and saliency detection. Also, I have participated in the joint research project “FALCON” with the partners: Vanderlande Industries, Embedded Systems Institute, TU Delft, TU Eindhoven and TU Twente. In the FALCON project, I have designed an object recognition system to be used for bin-picking in warehouses. During my PhD period, I have started collaborations with Ronald Poelman in the “CSI Den Haag” project and with artists from Dutch Royal Academy of Art (KABK ARLab) focusing on the utilization of AR systems in art.
