Dr. Dean Cocking

Dean Cocking is Hondius Fellow with the Delft Design for Values Institute and the author of Evil Online (with Jeroen van den Hoven, Wiley-Blackwell, 2018).

Research

He works on the nature of human valuing and our problems with appreciating value as we increasingly live online. His forthcoming work includes a special issue of Oxford's Journal of Practical Ethics on Evil Online. This symposium is in-press and includes a new paper (with Van den Hoven) ‘Moral Fog and the Appreciation of Value’. The special issue is edited by Roger Crisp (Oxford) and presents discussions of his work from Philip Kitcher, Dale Dorsey and Carissa Veliz. His other forthcoming research includes 'Friendship Online' (Oxford) and 'The Moral Fog of Social Media' and 'Growing Up Online' (both Rowman & Littlefield).

He has published extensively on friendship and ethical theory in journals such as Ethics and the Journal of Philosophy and has a book on virtue ethics and professional ethics (with Justin Oakley, Cambridge University Press). He has also led major research projects for industry, including a book length report on professional standards and integrity for the Professional Standards Council of Australia, and the development of a code of ethics for youth work in Australia (for the Youth Coalition-Australia). He and Van den Hoven are now working on a new book The Moral Fog and together will draft an open Humanities NWO application ‘Valuing in a Virtual World’ for submission in the fall of 2021.
