Ever heard of the Tower of Babel? It is one of Pieter Bruegel’s most iconic works and one of the most famous works in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. You can now see a fabulous 3D printed replica of it in our faculty. This internationally renowned artwork is extremely popular in Japan. Museum Boijmans loaned the painting to the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in April.

This gave the Tokyo University of Arts a great opportunity to work on a reproduction of the artwork in the ‘Study of Babel’ in collaboration with a team of researchers from the Department of Materials Science, including Joris Dik, professor Materials in Art & Archaeology. They conducted a materials analysis of the painting. In addition to a replica, a 3D animation was also made. See several examples here. Last week, the Japanese delegation from the Tokyo University of Arts handed over the replica to Joris Dik. If you are interested in seeing the painting, it is hanging on the first floor of the Department of Materials Science across from H-1-200.
