Cavitation Erosion Prediction
Ziru Li, MSc.
Objective
The objective of this study is to assess our current understanding of the cavitation erosion process in combination with an assessment of the capabilities of contemporary CFD codes to predict the risk of cavitation erosion.
Problem domain
Cavitation erosion prediction (focusing mainly on propellers or foils).
Approach
First, we need to find an appropriate cavitation erosion model. Second, it is important to get experience in the prediction of cavitation flows with a selected CFD code. Then, the most important step is to couple the CFD code with the erosion model and to make predictions of cavitation erosion on the basis of numerical simulations and the erosion model. Finally, if possible some experimental data will be used to validate the computational processes and results.
Results
Getting a further understanding the cavitation erosion process and obtaining a precise prediction of cavitation and evaluation of cavitation erosion by numerical simulation. The results are expected to show a good agreement with the results of empirical models and with experimental results.
